Here at PYT we’d just like to say a fond farewell to the delightful Little My, who are disbanding next month after four years of cheering people’s souls with their twee-pop ways. They are one of the many bands I was introduced to by Tina, a good friend with impeccable taste. Little My’s Second EP formed part of my Christmas present back in 2006 and I was rather taken by these sugary ditties with their mildly disturbing lyrical content. Since then I’ve persuaded Kate at The Fugitive Motel, Gareth at Elah Valley and PYT’s very own Dan that the most sensible gig idea is to invite a band up from Cardiff who have more instruments and members than we have stage space and the results were beautifully chaotic every time. Even the time they broke Dan’s flat.
Whilst it’s sad to see them go, I’m fully aware that sustaining a band of numerous rotating members who more often than not have day jobs as well as roles to play in other bands couldn’t really have lasted forever. Well, that and the fact that Harri Little My’s a bit morbid and probably always intended to kill his band off. It’s always the quiet ones…
So, in the style of truly awful reality television, here’s my list of Little My’s Best Bits:
- Harri Little My leaving Manchester’s most hardy gig goer, Cath Aubergine, mildly dumbfounded as he runs around the Star and Garter. In a bear suit. With a megaphone. Obviously this is normal Little My behaviour, but it was nice at PYT’s debut gig to confuse Cath a little bit. She went on to call them “more twee than Tim and Sam having a picnic at Ballamory”
- Graf Little My’s wooden spoon rage at Indietracks 09. Methinks he should have been given a more hardy percussive tool than the spoon. Nobody else managed to send theirs into the crowd in splinters.
- The time they kindly let Dan PYT be an honorary member with his own wooden spoon at the Star and Garter in November 2009. He didn’t break his though.
- Cover versions. All of them. Particularly Monsterpuss on Little My’s Third and the new live addition of Debaser.
- Making everybody wear ears. Obviously this is an important feature of Little My, but it didn’t seem to be one much appreciated by Gareth Campesinos! at Indietracks 09. He did look fetching in his little teddy bear ears though.
You probably get the idea by now. It’s been a shambles of a few years, but a delightful shambles. Farewell Little My.
Little My’s Wake will take place on 9th March in Cardiff – venue TBA. Please wear black as a mark of respect. The accompanying album of the same name should be available by then too, as well as the EPs Little My’s Ninth and Little My’s Tenth.
