Christopher Eatough writes and performs songs. His heartbreaking perspective on life has led people compare him to Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright, Neil Young and Sufjan Stevens. Over the past two years Christopher has played alongside Neal Casal, Lisa Mitchell, William Fitzsimmons, Rox, Starsailor and Mark Morriss, along with many others whilst attempting to recreate the tender atmosphere of his live performances on record. A Creak in the Cold, his debut album, is the result of these efforts.
Pull Yourself Together Records are proud to present A Creak in the Cold, and the free download single Shades of Blue, which is backed by the exclusive b-sides ‘Chemicals’, produced in session with The Answering Machine, and cover of their track ‘Rose”.
“Stepping out of the velvet-lined shadows of the Manchester acoustic underground scene, Christopher Eatough’s debut album “A Creak in the Cold” vibrates with a raw, electrical emotion; delivered through a stark, moving yet elegant series of songs that, though they explore the darkest corners of your mind, always seem to return with some conclusion of comfort to lie at your feet.
Having spent the last two years developing his individual sound and feel around Manchester’s cafés, bars and backstreet venues, Christopher has developed a stunning repertoire of songs that speak with a voice steeped in emotional resonance. This is a fascinating and occasionally disarming series of portraits on life and relationships, though their marriage to deftly crafted melodies of silk help to provide even the saddest lyrics with a soft and even landing. The record was pieced together as the optimism of summer faded into the introspection of autumn; the moods and moments captured at both the School of Sound Recording and various floorspaces across the city by producer David Jones. The result is a record that aims to speak simply, softly and firmly; Christopher’s starkly intimate lyrics often flanked solely by his weaving fingerpicking to create a bare-floor ambience that allows the songs to breathe, speak and sob for themselves. Also providing colours and textures to the record are long-term accompanist Clare Watson on violin, fellow renowned solo artist Ed Cottam and the subtle percussion of drummer Dan Reader. Throughout the ten tracks of the record, the combination of their accomplished and intelligent musicianship, Christopher’s haunting, individual and unique voice together with songs of maturity, quality and vintage intertwine together to produce an album of timeless, ethereal beauty.
In a world of music lined with acoustic troubadours from basement to bar and venue to vault, it takes something truly inspirational to stand out from the crowds. “A Creak in the Cold” is proof of Christopher Eatough’s startling talent and vindication of a voice that has been stirring up so many words of acclaim around the North West for the past year. This is a record that will speak to you and sooth you. This is a record that will soften the edges. This is a record for anyone who has a heart, no matter if it is barely beating through the aching weight upon your chest.”
